Planet Labs are launching the largest ever fleet of satellites into space with aim of taking better care of the earth.

Planet Labs, operating out of San Francisco, specialise in earth imaging, and this latest news represents the second stage in their plan to create a constellation of satellites surrounding the earth, which will enable them to image its entire surface every 24 hours.

This satellite network will allow planetary change to be monitored and analysed in unprecedented ways, whether it’s the deforestation of the land or the overfishing of the ocean.

The first stage launched 28 satellites, but this next stage far outpaces it, launching over 100 satellites from the US and Russia in the next year. New, smaller satellite designs, making launch arrangements more practical, and a new injection of funding have made this exciting and innovative project a reality.
